
Oyster Shells as a Stabilizer

Oyster shells have a distinctly stabilizing effect on the carbonate hardness of the water (KH value) and thus also on the acidity (pH value). Japanese Koi breeders use the shells for mineral conditioning of the water in breeding facilities.
Koi are susceptible to excessively low carbonate hardness. Aquatic plants also suffer. This leads to pH fluctuations over the course of the day or a sudden drop (pH crash). It is often assumed that with slightly harder tap water, no problems with KH and pH values would arise.
The KH value is considered to some extent as a buffer for the pH of the water. Fish, plants, and biological filters reduce the carbonate hardness of the water. Even in periods with heavy rainfall, the KH value decreases rapidly. Unstable water values with mineral deficiencies often lead to algae problems.
Oyster shells ensure complete, long-term stabilization of the KH and pH values. The shells only dissolve slowly when the KH drops, thereby buffering the pH. Completely independent of the amount of precipitation, water renewal, or season, the oyster shells keep the KH and pH values in the pond at a stable level.
The oyster shells are supplied in a 10-liter bucket with a net. They have been cleaned and disinfected, so no pathogens can enter the pond.
The shells can also be distributed in the gravel plant filter without a net.
